Fifty years after the first Pi Kapp College it has returned to the City of our founding, Charleston the holy city.
With nearly 400 students and 130 volunteers (many of whom were not PiKapps) attending PKC2009 was a rousing success. There were 3 tracts, Archon Tract, Standards Board Tract, and Chaplain’s Tract. The Standards Board Tract is new with the students learning how to hold their Chapter brothers accountable. The Archon’s Tract showcased leadership. The Chaplain’s went through the Certified Ritualists program with around 130 of them graduating to become Certified Ritualist. As part of the program tours were given to the students who got to see the Gate, the Clock in the cistern, the Bell Tower, the Rose Garden, and 90 Broad Street. They also got to soak in some of the local history. I wish every one of you could have been there. On Saturday a model of Initiation was performed. I had the honor of renewing my vows to Pi Kappa Phi and being re-initiated. The initiating team was the best I have ever seen. It was inspiring as well as spiritual. It was a fitting way to show that Pi Kappa Phi is a lifelong Brotherhood. Dr. Phil Summers was presented his Golden Legion Award for 50 years of Brotherhood. He gave one of the keynote speeches and reminisced about attending the first Pi Kapp College in 1959. Durwood Owen introduced Dr. Summers and also recounted on his experiences at that PKC. The programming was top notch as were the Volunteers and National Staff. We are fortunate to have the best National Staff in the whole Fraternal world. As we march along in our second century, Pi Kappa Phi is changing the face of Fraternity. We all can be proud that we have been given the honor to be called Pi Kapps.
